April 30, 2013—Protect Your Paycheck During Disability Awareness MonthFor the majority of us, our most important asset isn't our home or car or jewelry collection. It's our income. Consider this: In a 40-year career, a person who earns $52,000 a year would make over $2,000,000 in his or her lifetime. Think of everything that depends on that person's income—mortgage, college, family vacations, retirement savings—there are many daily expenses and lifelong goals that rely on that paycheck.
So what happens if those paychecks stopped? What if a person's lifetime savings becomes the only way to meet expenses? That's where disability insurance comes in. It provides an income if a worker is unable to work because of illness or injury.
Unfortunately, disability is behind a significant number of home foreclosures and personal bankruptcies. Insuring against it has not been a high priority for most workers, because many assume they're already covered through Social Security, state-mandated Workers' Compensation, or employer-provided group plans. There are, however, numerous holes in this safety net of coverage. About 45 percent of those who initially apply for disability benefits through Social Security are denied, and those who are approved get an average benefit of just $1,063 monthly—hardly enough to replace the average worker's income.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 70 percent of employers do not offer long-term disability coverage. Yet 9 out of 10 workers think all employers should offer disability insurance.1 At the same time, 77 percent of workers think that missing work for at least 3 months would create a financial hardship, while half think it would cause a "great hardship."
A few facts underscore the importance of replacing income if a person is too sick or hurt to work:
- 74 percent of households have no disability insurance at all.
- 1 in 3 Americans entering the work force will experience a disability before they retire.
- 1 in 5 workers will be out of work for at least a year due to illness or accident before age 65.2
- Most people in the U.S. are better prepared financially in case of death (usually with life insurance) than if they get disabled, even though the chances are at least 3 to 5 times greater (depending on age) that a disability will occur.2
- Someone who is 35 years old has a 50 percent chance of disability for 90 days or more before they turn 65.2
- Workers' Compensation covers only work-related disabilities, but according to the National Safety Council, 73 percent of disabling accidents and illnesses are not work-related.2
May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month. Now is the ideal time to help accounts and their employees explore the many disability insurance options that area available to them. To learn more, visit www.indigo-insurance.com or contact your account executive today.

July 31, 2012—Stop Loss added to Indigo's Growing Suite of Coverage OptionsIndigo Insurance Services, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, today announced it will offer Stop-Loss insurance to employers domiciled outside of Massachusetts who choose to self-fund their health care. April 21, 2011—May is Disability Insurance Awareness MonthMay is Disability Insurance Awareness month (DIAM). Disability insurance is the most overlooked and misunderstood of the major forms of insurance. That's what makes DIAM such an important annual event. It brings the industry together in support of a simple goal: getting people to think about their need for disability insurance coverage—a need that is certainly there. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 72 percent of American workers do not have long-term disability insurance coverage. That leaves a lot of people vulnerable financially. Being aware of the importance of disability insurance can ultimately be what saves one's economic stability.
